A/B Testing Ad Copy and Creative in Agency AI

Quick answer

Two ways to test, both on Meta Image and Video ads. Ad copy testing: add up to 3 extra captions, headlines and descriptions on one ad and Meta rotates the combinations toward what performs. Multiple images: put up to 10 images on one ad and Meta does the same with creative. For a clean read on a single variable, create separate ads with Create New Ad in the same ad set and compare them in Manage Ads after 7 days.

Ad copy testing (inside one ad)

  1. On an Image or Video ad, fill in the first Caption, Headline and Description as usual, or generate them.
  2. Click + Add under any of the three. A grey-labeled extra field appears. Up to 3 extras per field type.
  3. If you generated the first option with AI, the extra field generates a fresh variation automatically. Edit or replace it. Remove any option with its ×.
  4. Create the ad. Meta serves combinations of your options and shifts delivery to the ones that win.

Good for finding the best message fast. Less good for learning why, because Meta reports the ad as a whole. To see which option won, open the ad in Meta Ads Manager and use the text breakdown.

Multiple images (inside one ad)

Add up to 10 images. Meta places each by aspect ratio and favors the ones that perform. A practical set: your best product photo in Square and Story, plus two Genie concepts in both sizes. Six images, two ideas, every placement covered.

Separate ads (clean A/B)

When you want to know whether a specific change matters (angle, offer, hook, image style), isolate it:

  1. Create ad A with Create New Ad in an existing ad set.
  2. Create ad B the same way, in the same ad set, changing one thing. Same audience, same budget, same start.
  3. Wait 7 days. Don't touch either one; edits reset the learning phase.
  4. Compare in Manage Ads on the Ads tab: ROAS, cost per purchase, CTR. Meta's delivery favors one ad over time, so read the metrics, not the spend split.
  5. Pause the loser. Iterate on the winner.

Copywriting Angles are built for this: generate three ads across three angles and let the data pick. See Copywriting Angles Explained.

What to test first

  1. Image. Creative moves results more than anything else. Lifestyle vs studio, with vs without a person, Genie concept vs photo.
  2. Hook. The first line of the caption and the headline.
  3. Offer. Percentage off vs free shipping vs bundle.
  4. Angle. Social proof vs pain point vs value.

One variable per test. Two changes at once tells you nothing.

Reading results

  • Under about 50 purchases per ad, differences are mostly noise. Judge on cost per purchase and ROAS, not clicks.
  • CTR tells you the creative stops the scroll. It doesn't tell you it sells. Curiosity angles win CTR and lose ROAS.
  • Growth Plays flags fatigue (frequency up, CTR down) with a creative refresh recommendation. That's your cue to start the next test.

Google

Performance Max tests for you. Give it 10 to 15 headlines, 5 long headlines, 5 descriptions and 10 images per asset group; Google assembles and optimizes combinations. To compare two creative directions, use New Asset Group in the same campaign. See Creating a Google Performance Max campaign.
