Static vs Dynamic Ads: What Each One Looks Like in the Feed
Quick answer
A static ad (Image or Video) shows one fixed creative to everybody. A dynamic ad has no fixed banner at all: it pulls products straight from your Meta catalog and builds a personalized carousel for each viewer. That is why a dynamic ad cannot be previewed as a single image. There is no single image to show.
Static ads
Image and Video ads use creative you chose or generated. Everyone who sees the ad sees the same thing. You control the visual, the caption, the headline, the description and the landing page.
Best for a hero product, a sale or promotion, a seasonal campaign, or driving traffic to one specific collection page. Also the right choice when the message matters more than the product mix, for example a brand story or a free delivery announcement.
Dynamic ads
Dynamic ads (Meta calls these catalog ads) work differently. You supply the caption and the call to action. Meta supplies everything else, assembled per person from your product catalog:
- The product images come from your catalog, which means they are your real product photography
- Headlines and descriptions come from the catalog product titles and prices
- Which products appear is chosen by Meta for each individual viewer
The result is a scrollable carousel of products. Two people seeing the same ad at the same moment will usually see different products in it.
How are the products chosen?
Not at random. Meta selects per viewer using the signals it holds on that person: what they browsed on your site, what they added to a cart, what they bought before, what they engaged with, and what people with similar behaviour tend to buy. On remarketing in particular, a dynamic ad will typically show somebody the exact products they already looked at.
You can narrow the pool yourself using Product Sets when you create the ad, which limits the carousel to a collection or subset rather than the whole catalog. Meta then personalizes within that set.
Does the carousel scroll on its own?
No. The viewer swipes or clicks through it themselves. The first card is the one that has to do the work, which is why Meta's product ordering matters and why your catalog image quality matters more than most merchants expect.
What dynamic ads need
A product catalog synced to Meta through the Facebook & Instagram Shopify app. If that connection is missing or stale, dynamic ads have nothing to pull from. See Setting up the Facebook & Instagram Shopify app.
Choosing between them
|
|
Static (Image / Video) | Dynamic (catalog) |
|---|---|---|
| Creative | One fixed banner or video | No banner. Products pulled per viewer |
| Images | Uploaded or AI generated | Your catalog product photography |
| Headline | You write it | From the catalog |
| Preview | Yes, exactly as it will appear | No fixed preview. Assembled per person |
| Best for | Sales, hero products, brand messages | Remarketing and always-on catalog coverage |
Most accounts run both. A dynamic ad handles broad catalog coverage and does the heavy lifting on spend, while static ads carry specific campaigns and promotions.
Why spend often lands on the dynamic ad
All ads in an ad set compete. Meta pushes budget toward whatever performs, and dynamic ads frequently win that competition because personalized product imagery converts well and the format has almost no creative fatigue. Every viewer sees a fresh mix.
At small daily budgets this effect is pronounced. Your static banner ads may receive very little spend or none at all, not because they were rejected but because Meta found the dynamic ad more efficient. That is the system working as intended. If you specifically want a static ad to get delivery, put it in its own ad set.
A note on banner imagery
Static banners are designed as advertising creative, not as a product catalogue. They are modelled on the range that appears on the landing page rather than reproducing individual SKUs. Once someone taps the ad, the banner is gone and they are browsing your real store with your real photography.
If you would rather every ad show exact catalog products, dynamic ads do precisely that, which is another reason to keep at least one running.
